1. They're the same hardware

Let's get this out of the way: Deye manufactures both brands. A SunSynk 5kW and a Deye 5kW come off the same production line. The internals — inverter board, comms board, DC-DC converter, MPPT charge controllers — are identical.

The differences are in the firmware, the user interface, and the support structure:

  • SunSynk runs a modified firmware with SA-specific tuning. The interface is more consumer-friendly. Local support runs through a dedicated SunSynk SA office.
  • Deye runs Deye-standard firmware. The interface has more technical settings exposed. Support runs through importers and distributors. Generally R1 000 – R3 000 cheaper for an equivalent model.

3. Real failure modes from SA owners

Comms board C9 capacitor failure (SunSynk 8kW)

A specific capacitor on the communications board fails, causing the inverter to lose connectivity, display errors, or reboot randomly. Fix: the comms board is a replaceable module — R500–R800 over the counter from SunSynk SA. You don't need to replace the whole inverter.

SunSynk and Deye owners regularly report DC-side temperatures of 70–88°C during SA summer. This is within the manufacturer's maximum operating temperature of 95°C but can cause anxiety for new owners.

BMS communication failures with third-party batteries

The most common communication failure is between Deye/SunSynk inverters and Pylontech batteries — and it's almost always the CAN bus cable, not the inverter or battery. See the cable pinout section below.

4. The Deye Cloud outage — what happened

⚠ 17 June 2026 — Deye Cloud went down globally for ~3 hours.

Users across South Africa, Australia, the UK, and Asia lost all remote monitoring and control. SunSynk (separate cloud platform) was not affected.

This was the first major outage, but it exposed two real risks every Deye owner should know:

1. Cloud dependency — you lose visibility when Deye's servers are down. If you rely on the Deye Cloud app to check your system, a cloud outage means you're blind. The fix: set up local monitoring via SolarAssistant or Home Assistant on a Raspberry Pi. These tools talk directly to your inverter via its local Ethernet port and work even when the internet is off.

2. Deye uses public WhatsApp groups for installer support — your inverter's serial number may be visible to strangers. MyBroadband has documented that Deye SA uses large WhatsApp groups where installers post customers' data logger serial numbers. A malicious person could steal a photo from the group, unbind the logger from your account, and potentially take control of your inverter settings.

Bottom line: Deye inverters are solid hardware. The cloud and support channels are the weak points. Plan for local monitoring from day one, and ask your installer to keep your logger serial number private — not posted in a public WhatsApp group.

5. Battery cable pinout — the most common problem

This is the #1 compatibility issue reported on PowerForum: "My Deye/SunSynk won't talk to my Pylontech battery." Nine times out of ten, it's the CAN bus cable, not the equipment.

Here's why: Deye/SunSynk inverters use a specific pinout for their CAN/RS485 communication port, and off-the-shelf RJ45 cables rarely match it. If your installer used a standard network cable instead of a correctly pinned communication cable, your inverter and battery won't establish a link.

Only pins 4 and 5 are used for CAN communication. Pins 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8 should be empty. If the cable has wires on other pins, it can cause signal interference or ground loops that prevent communication.

Pro tip: Many installers use the cable that comes in the Pylontech box. If they lose it, they grab a standard network cable — which has all 8 pins wired and often causes the EXACT problem the homeowner is calling about. The solution is either the official Pylontech-Deye cable or a custom cable with only pins 4+5 wired.

6. Parallel inverters — firmware gotchas

Want to add a second inverter a few years after your first install? This is more complicated than most installers will tell you.

The firmware version trap

Parallel operation requires identical firmware versions on all inverters in the parallel group. If you bought your first SunSynk in 2023 and add another in 2026, they almost certainly have different firmware — and SunSynk doesn't make all firmware versions available for download.

7. Heat and derating in SA summers

South African summers push inverter cooling to its limits. Here's what SA owners actually see:

  • SunSynk 5kW (fanless): 70–88°C DC temperature reported regularly during summer afternoons. No active cooling — relies on heatsink and convection.
  • Deye 5kW (fanned): 45–60°C with the internal fan running. The fan is audible but keeps temperatures significantly lower.
  • Both brands: Begin power derating above 55°C ambient (per spec sheet). In practice, this means you may lose 10–20% of rated output during the hottest part of a 35°C+ summer day.
